Prescriptions Charges and Exemptions

Extensive exemption and remission arrangements protect those likely to have difficulty in paying charges (NHS prescription and dental charges, optical and hospital travel costs).

The NHS prescription charge is a flat-rate amount which successive Governments have thought it reasonable to charge for those who can afford to pay for their medicines. Prescription prepayment certificates (PPCs) offer real savings for people who need extensive medication.

Drug Wastage

is costing the NHS millions…

It is estimated that as much as £300 million is wasted every year on unused or partially used medication. If the rest of the UK is taken into account, the figure is closer to 400 million.

Wasted medicine is everyone’s responsibility and there are small changes we can make to help reduce the amount of medicine being wasted. These savings could be reinvested into more front-line care and services for the benefit of all. You can help by requesting only what you need.
